52 and rising

3 Sep

Wee Ginger Dug

I don’t like to blow my own trumpet, but you know, [trumpet blast]. Last week in my article for The National I said that no amount of SNPbaddery from the Scottish media was going to dent support for independence, because the reasons for independence are not predicated on the alleged personal behaviour of any SNP politician, no matter how prominent or influential. The desire for independence is not determined by the alleged misbehaviour and failures of Thatessempee. It’s determined by the very real misbehaviour and failures of the British state, which – unlike the alleged personal misdeeds of an individual independence supporting politician – affect everyone.

And so it has come to pass. The opinion poll commissioned by, cue irony, Better for Britain this weekend demonstrates that in the event of Brexit, a majority of voters in Scotland would opt for independence. Should Brexit go ahead, as seems likely, 52%…

Frontline Report: SNP Civil War

3 Sep

Random Public Journal

By Jason Michael

IT WAS A PICTURE OF CARNAGE. On Friday evening, from one side of Scotland to the other, social media was abuzz with reports of both sides’ opening manœuvres in the bloody #SNPCivilWar. In spite of incessant side-switching, Team B – or possibly Team A (who knows?) occupied Mecca Bingo opposite the bus station in Ayr, later in the night news reached GHQ while everyone was watching a rerun of Love Island that a Buckfast bottle had been smashed on Sauchiehall Street. Why have the Tories been quiet on the Alex Salmond case?

3 Sep

Talking-up Scotland

Remember that, in the Daily Torygraph too? It was on 30th October 2017. How many have been sacked?

Or this in June 2018? Two former Tory mayors were convicted of multiple child-sex offences in just 48 hours. One of them was found guilty of raping a young girl, while the other admitted to over 20 counts of child abuse.

Or that one in 2014? Sir Nicholas Fairbairn and former party Scottish chairman Dr Alistair Smith were named as suspects in the historic abuse of underage boys. Labour justice spokesman Graeme Pearson said a public inquiry “cannot afford to leave any stone unturned and it must have the confidence of the victims”. Four years later, any developments?

I could go on and on for the Tories with their trail of slime disappearing back in time.

Labour, in sharp contrast, have been all over the Salmond case. Though somewhat less…
