Bill of Rights

30 Mar

For months now, I’ve been lying in bed unable to sleep, thinking of various different things that I could put on this blog.  Why has it taken me so long to get round to actually posting?  Various reasons I suppose, but the main one being prevarication!

So what got me to write this post?  I got inspired.  Inspired by a fellow Fibro sufferer who blogs.  So many things she said in this post just made me feel energised and wanting to post.  When she gave herself permission to sleep, it reminded me of something my Psychologist gave me when I was seeing her a few years ago.  I’d like to share it with you now.

“Bill of Rights”

  1. I have the right to express my feelings, opinions and beliefs.
  2. I have the right to say “yes” and “no” for myself.
  3. I have the right to change my mind.
  4. I have the right to say “I don’t understand”.
  5. I have the right simply to be myself without having to act for other people’s benefit.
  6. I have the right not to be responsible for finding solutions to other people’s problems.
  7. I have the right to make reasonable requests of others.
  8. I have the right to set my own priorities.
  9. I have the right to be listened to and taken seriously.
  10. I have the right to make mistakes and feel comfortable about admitting to them.
  11. I have the right to be illogical in making decisions.
  12. I have the right to say at times: “I don’t care”.
  13. I have the right to be miserable or cheerful.
  14. I have the right to say no – without feeling guilty.

I have my Bill of Rights stuck on the door of my fridge, so that I can see them every day.  Perhaps ’15. I have the right to give myself permission’ should be added now.

What do you think?  Do you like the Bill of Rights and will you add 15. to it?
